I’ve been wanting to upgrade the storage situation in my foyer for a few years now. Among other things, the old shelving didn’t really have any places to hang coats and hats for visitors, and the shoe storage cubes were a bit small so fitting two shoes into a compartment could be awkward.

I looked at some options for pre-made “hall trees”, but either they didn’t fit, or I didn’t like the design, or there were complaints about the build quality. I considered making something from scratch, such as out of 80/20 and plywood. Then I remembered it’s the time of year for the annual elfa sale, and since I already have some compatible shelving elsewhere in the house where I could swap parts, I sketched up a design and placed an order for a freestanding unit.

So far, so good – now I’ve got drawers, shelves, hangers, and hooks, and while the shoe trays are too narrow to hold two pairs side-by-side, there’s a second row in back and they slide out like drawers. Some of the larger gardening items from the old shelves don’t really have a good place to go, but I can store them with some other gardening stuff, and now I have places to put some of the smaller items that have been cluttering up the steps.
